Gun-running police officer arrested in Philippines

Manila - A Philippine police officer who allegedly led a gun-running syndicate was arrested by colleagues in an operation in the capital, a police report said Friday. Four accomplices of Police Inspector Ruben Ballera were also arrested while selling guns to undercover police operatives on Thursday outside the main police headquarters in Manila suburb Quezon City. The report said officers seized four M16 assault rifles, two pistols, a silencer, magazines and ammunition from Ballera and his accomplices. It added that the suspects were undergoing interrogation at the main police headquarters in Camp Crame, while criminal charges were being prepared against them. According to police estimates, there are more than 1 million firearms throughout the country. The Philippines ranks 10th among countries with a high rate of gun-related homicide, according to World Health Organization data.
