150,000 evacuated as storms batter southern China

Jul 4, 2009, 9:48 GMT

Beijing - Torrential rains and flooding forced more than 150,000 people from their homes, cut power and destroyed crops across southern China, state media reported Saturday.

More than 47,000 people were evacuated in the Guanxi region after three days of heavy rain flooded the Rongjiang River, destroying houses and inundating crops, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Another 7,000 residents were evacuated after Guangxi's Kama reservoir overflowed, and water breached the dam. The semi-official China News Service reported that water burst through the bottom of the dam wall, threatening the entire structure on Friday.

In Jiangxi province, 2 people were killed and more than 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes after the heaviest rains seen so far this summer, Xinhua reported earlier.

Across the entire southern region, there have been dozens of reported deaths and many others are still missing.

In the first six months of the year, 95 people were killed in storm-related incidents, and 21 others are still missing, according to a report released by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief headquarters.
