Hong Kong grandmother arrested over home-alone girl on window ledge
Jul 6, 2009, 2:42 GMT
Hong Kong - A grandmother has been arrested for neglect after a three-year-old girl left home alone was found on a window ledge of a high-rise block of flats, a news report said Monday.
The girl, who had crawled out onto the ledge, was rescued by emergency services after being spotted sitting on the 10-meter-high ledge by a restaurant owner.
She was uninjured and her 47-year-old grandmother, who cares for the girl while her parents live elsewhere, was arrested when she returned home later, police said.
The grandmother was accused of negligence and released on police bail pending further inquiries following the incident on Saturday, according to the Hong Kong Standard newspaper.
There have been a number of cases of children falling to their deaths from high-rise apartment blocks in Hong Kong after being left unattended by parents or carers in recent years.
A survey last year found that nine out of 10 Hong Kong children had been left home alone by parents or carers at some stage and one in eight have been left home alone overnight.
