Singapore court sentences teacher to jail for maid abuse
Jul 10, 2009, 8:21 GMT
Singapore - A Singapore court on Friday sentenced a teacher to six weeks in jail for maid abuse, media reports said.
Mat Nooh Sajari, 38, was found guilty of causing hurt to the 33-year-old maid, identified as Ms Sulastri, on several occasions in February 2007, but he appealed the verdict and was released on bail of 10,000 Singapore dollars (6,845 US dollars).
Mat Nooh, a father of two, was found guilty of kicking the maid in the belly, slapping her for not preparing curry puffs properly, and throwing a chair, pot lid and cup at her, the online edition of the Straits Times newspaper reported.
The maid, who suffered injuries to her right arm and toes, eventually fled the apartment and reported the abuse to the police.
Mat Nooh's lawyer asked the court to impose fines on his client, arguing that the maid's injuries were not serious and that his client was likely to lose his job should the verdict stand, the report said.

people who were present at the court like me knew the truth. The judge may find him guilty,, but there is this unwritten law in Singapore concerning maids. Their chances are always 80-20 even before the case goes to court.
It’s nonsense verdict! The chair throwing incident: If an iron chair was thrown n landed on the feet, it would caused a fracture! The interesting thing to note is, maid didn’t even mentioned it in the FIR or to the doctor! Doctor confirmed in court, maid never told him abt it and there was no injury (swollen or bleeding) on the feet! The police didn’t even seized the chair from the accused home. And during the alleged incident the accused was out giving tuition at a tuition centre.
Pot lid: from the pix in the court the distance thrown was 1.5ft not 1.5m. This is derived counting from the floor tiles. At this distance the projectile is just abt to gain speed and caused 3 sub-centimetre bruises? However from the police pix, there was only one bruise. However, when the maid went to see the doctor some 3hrs later, the bruises had developed into 3 sub-centimetre and separate! The prosecution doctor confirmed this in court.
Kicking: Maid alleged accused to kick on abodomen where she had undergone cessarian operation when giving birth. However upon questioning the doctor confirmed there was no mark or whatsoever on the maid’s abdomen. Where is the surgical scars? Interesting to note, accused was having some gait problem on his leg and supported by evidence around the time.
Slapping: Maid alleged, she was slapped while facing the accused. The accused used his right hand and slapped her on the right cheek and part of the hand touched her eye and caused an infection! Firstly, how cud someone slapped using his right hand and hit her right face? Go ahead and try. Secondly, how could a slap caused an infection to the eye? Doctor confirmed in court as just an infection not related to the slapping.
Throwing cup containing Ribena. It was alleged, while heating a dish, accused threw a cup containing ribena at maid. However, upon questioning, whether the food that she is heating got wet or not, the maid answered “NO” as the ribena already splashed onto her head and both her front n back body!
With all the incredible stories told by the maid, pity the accused, being found guilty by the judge. (unwritten law being exercised here?) With all these looming allegation it’s a pity that teacher has had to suffer and loosing his career.
