Japanese astronaut to mark birthday with sushi, cake (Extra)
Jul 31, 2009, 20:52 GMT
Washington - Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata is just back from a four-month stint on the International Space Station, but that won't stop him from celebrating his birthday in style.
Wakata, who returned Friday aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, will turn 46 on Saturday.
'I'm just looking forward to having a lot of sushi and a birthday cake. It's in production I think,' he told reporters at a post- landing news conference.
Asked if he'd invited the five US and one Canadian astronaut who flew with him aboard Endeavour, he turned to his crewmates and asked, 'Can you handle raw fish?'
Laughter and at least one 'absolutely' was the enthusiastic response.
The Endeavour's 17-day mission saw the completion of the Japanese laboratory on the International Space Station.
