Insurance fraud leaves cafe owner dead in Australia
Aug 27, 2009, 8:39 GMT
Sydney - A debt-ridden Australian who set fire to his Adelaide cafe to claim on the insurance died in the flames, a coroner declared Thursday.
Francesco Levato's body was found with a cigarette lighter in his left hand after the May 2006 explosion and fire. There were empty petrol cans in the cafe and traces of petrol in the boot of his car.
'Mr Levato's motive in destroying the premises was to end his association with it or at least to achieve some form of temporary respite from the adverse financial position,' coroner Anthony Schapel said. 'There is no sensible explanation for the presence of the lighter in Mr Levato's hand other than that he had intended to use it and had used it as a source of ignition.'
