Gold galore for Masters Games golden girl
Oct 18, 2009, 8:44 GMT
Sydney - Australia's Ruth Frith, the undisputed golden girl of Sydney's World Masters Games, won her sixth gold Sunday.
'This medal will just go in the draw with all the others,' the 100-year-old great-grandmother said before skipping the games closing ceremony and flying home to Brisbane.
She's the age-category world champion in the hammer, the discus, the weight, the shot put and the javelin. And she's an inspiration for the 28,000 competitors in this year's edition of the world's biggest multi-sport event.
Frith, who famously hates vegetables and still thinks a woman's place is in the kitchen, has words of wisdom for those worried about wrinkles and grey hair.
'Don't let anyone tell you when you are 50 that you are old,' Frith told The German Press Agency dpa. 'But I can't talk to you any more now because I have to go and see a prince.'
The appointment was with Denmark's Prince Frederik, a medal-less World Masters Games competitor. It was the second time this week that Frith had granted Frederik an audience.
