Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have detained a man and his wife for allegedly beating their Indonesian maid and then locking her in the toilet for two days before she was finally rescued, a news report said Thursday.
A 29-year-old woman was detained Tuesday shortly after neighbours informed the police that the maid, 36-year-old Mautik Hani from Indonesia's Surabaya district, had been locked up.
On Wednesday, the woman's 30-year-old husband surrendered to the police. Both have been remanded for seven days for investigations.
Mautik was found with bruises and wounds on her leg, arms and face. She is currently being treated at a local hospital for her injuries.
Mautik, who did not have valid travel documents, had been working for the couple for the past two months, the Star newspaper said.
Police said the male suspect has seven previous criminal convictions, including for drug offences, causing hurt and robbery.
Malaysia is home to some 320,000 maids, of which some 85 per cent are from Indonesia. Indonesian maids earn from 400 ringgit (121 dollars) a month.
