Chilly spring in New Zealand
Nov 1, 2009, 20:08 GMT
Wellington - New Zealand shivered through the coldest October in 27 years including the biggest springtime snowfall in the North Island for more than half a century, according to a report Monday.
It followed the warmest August - traditionally the coldest winter month - on record.
The October mean temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius was 1.4 degrees below average, climate scientist Jim Salinger told the New Zealand Herald.
He said heavy snow that trapped hundreds of motorists on North Island roads early in the month were the latest spring snowfalls recorded since 1951.
