Taiwan funeral parlour apologizes for cadaver confusion
Nov 5, 2009, 15:24 GMT
Taipei - A Taiwan funeral parlour apologized Thursday for mixing up two corpses, causing one family to cremate the wrong corpse and the other to hold a memorial service with the incorrect body.
When the first family opened the coffin to dress the body for the funeral, they noticed that the red envelope with money for the afterlife they had previously placed in the coffin as per Taiwanese tradition was in a different place, and contained more money. Also, the man's gold tooth was missing.
The family phoned the funeral parlour to notify them of the discrepancies. After looking into the issue, the funeral parlour said they had been given the wrong body. The other family, meanwhile, had cremated their loved one's body.
The funeral parlour paid the first family 396,000 Taiwan dollars (12,000 US dollars) and arranged for the ashes to be returned. It offered to pay for a second funeral for the other family, this time with the correct body.
