Two blasts rock Philippine capital

Nov 9, 2009, 4:14 GMT

Manila - Two explosions rocked Manila Monday, but no one was hurt in the attacks, which occurred near businesses, police said.

The first blast was outside the main office of the food and beverage giant San Miguel Corp in the Ortigas business district in Mandaluyong City in metropolitan Manila.

Senior Superintendent Carlos De Sagun, Mandaluyong City police chief, said the 3 am (1900 GMT Sunday) blast destroyed the company's signage but hurt no one.

'Unfortunately, no one witnessed the incident, not even San Miguel's security guards,' he said.

More than two hours later, the second explosion struck the Puregold Supermarket along busy Commonwealth Avenue in the suburban city of Quezon.

The blast damaged a canopy outside the supermarket but also did not hurt anyone, said Chief Superintendent Elmo San Diego, Quezon City police chief.

San Diego ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack but said authorities were still investigating the incident.

'This has nothing to do with terrorism,' he said. 'This is an isolated case.'

Last month, two similar explosions rocked businesses in nearby Pasig City and Quezon City. Investigators have yet to determine the motives for those attacks.
