Two dead in Indonesian shopping centre collapse
Dec 23, 2009, 8:00 GMT
Jakarta - A building under construction at a Jakarta shopping centre collapsed Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring 11 others, a media report said.
Part of an extension on the third floor of Metro Tanah Abang mall collapsed in the morning, burying more than a dozen construction workers under rubble, said the chief of central Jakarta city police, Hamidin, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.
The collapsed structure was part of an extension being built to accommodate extra toilets for visitors, he said.
Two people were confirmed dead in the incident and at least 11 others were injured, the detik.com online news service reported.
Central Jakarta Mayor Sylviana Murni confirmed the additional construction project had no permit, saying that the developers were responsible for the fatal accident.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known and local police were investigating the case.
