South Korea to send food aid for North Korean children
Dec 28, 2009, 7:36 GMT
Seoul - Seoul said Monday it has approved the delivery of 26 billion won (22 million dollars) of food aid for malnourished children in North Korea.
The South Korean Unification Ministry said the humanitarian fund would be donated to the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund programme to feed North Korean children.
Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-Sung promised some 6 billion won for the reforestation of North Korea's flood-prone landscape and other programmes to be implemented mainly through South Korean churches.
The aid plan follows the shipment of swine flu medication worth 15 million dollars on December 18 to North Korea.
Despite the aid from the South, North Korea raised tensions last week by declaring the disputed Yellow Sea border area to be a firing drill zone and warned South Korean ships to stay away.
