Jan 14, 2010, 2:08 GMT
Washington - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton scrapped plans to travel to South Pacific counties to return to Washington and deal with the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti.
Clinton was in Honolulu, Hawaii, about to embark on travel to Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia when she told reporters she had cancelled the visits.
Haiti was hit by a 7 magnitude earthquake Tuesday afternoon, and the US government was launching plans to help the impoverished Caribbean neighbour. Haitian officials have warned that tens of thousands or more could be dead.
