Feb 5, 2010, 11:06 GMT
Paris - At least one person has died and several people were injured as a typhoon with winds of more than 200 kilometres per hour struck the islands of French Polynesia, French media reported Friday.
The victim was a 40-year-old man who was swept away by waves as he walked along a beach on the island of Tubai. The injured included a man who was blown off the roof of his house by the wind on the island of Bora Bora.
The storm, which had gathered strength on Friday, cut power and damaged telephone lines on many islands, destroyed several hundred homes and forced the evacuation of about 4,000 people.
The popular tourist destination Tahiti suffered relatively little damage. French Polynesia comprises 121 islands, 76 of which are populated.
