Japan to fund development projects in southern Philippines
Mar 18, 2010, 5:16 GMT
Manila - Japan plans to fund more than 700,000 dollars of development projects in the Philippines' conflict-wracked southern region of Mindanao, the government said Thursday.
The projects would be implemented in the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato and Maguindanao, which have been plagued by security woes caused by a decades-old Muslim insurgency.
The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process said Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura would sign contracts for the project next week.
The office said the assistance would fund the construction of school buildings, training centres, dormitories, a potable water system and a health facility in the three provinces.
Japan has been a key supporter of government efforts to forge a peace agreement with Muslim separatist rebels and promote development in the southern Philippines.
