Taiwan sends medical team to China's earthquake region
Apr 18, 2010, 7:38 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan sent a medical team to China's Qinghai province on Sunday to provide assistance to earthquake survivors, local media reported.
The national Red Cross dispatched the 20-member team of doctors and nurses from three hospitals to Qinghai provincial capital Xining.
The team planned to bring 3.3 tons of medicine and supplies, but was restricted to 1 ton of cargo by airline rules, officials said.
The Taiwan Red Cross also donated 100,000 US dollars in assistance to the affected region, and launched a donation drive to raise more funds for Qinghai survivors.
Civic groups and movie stars also donated relief money after Wednesday's magnitude-7.1 quake that killed at least 1,484 people killed and injured more than 12,000 in the high-altitude province of western China.
