Indonesian police arrest two over monkey meatballs
Apr 28, 2010, 11:15 GMT
Jakarta - Police in East Java province have arrested a couple for allegedly killing monkeys and selling their flesh for meatball soup, a wildlife conservation group said Wednesday.
The two were arrested on April 13 after police received information from conservationists that the suspects made a living hunting Javan langurs, also known as silver-leaf monkeys, ProFauna said.
Police found 30 kilograms of meat estimated to come from up to 25 monkeys, two rifles, and a live langur, the group said in a statement.
'The couple admitted that they had known what they did was against the law and they hunted the monkeys for their meat because beef and chicken were more expensive than the protected monkeys,' the statement said.
A local version of meatball soup is a popular dish in Indonesia.
The couple, who could face five years in jail if found guilty, poached the monkeys in the Baluran National Park areas, ProFauna said.
