US ambassador meets with Philippine presidential frontrunner Aquino
May 21, 2010, 11:18 GMT
Manila - United States Ambassador Harry Thomas Junior met Friday with Benigno Aquino III, the apparent winner in the May 10 Philippine presidential elections.
Thomas said the meeting, held at the private residence of Aquino in suburban Quezon City, focused on ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
'We congratulated the Filipino people on this election process,' he said after the meeting with Aquino. 'There were some bumps and bruises but that is to be expected... The will of the Filipino people has been respected '
'We want to talk with the incoming administration, work very closely with them,' he added.
Thomas said US President Barack Obama would wait until Aquino is announced as winner by the Congress before he sends a congratulatory message.
Under Philippine laws it is the Congress which tallies the votes and proclaims the winners in the presidential and the vice presidential race.
Based on the unofficial tally of the Commission on Elections, Aquino was ahead of his rivals by over 5 million votes.
