China puts death toll in April earthquake at 2,698
May 31, 2010, 10:47 GMT
Beijing - Chinese authorities Monday said that 2,698 people were killed in an earthquake that hit the Tibetan plateau in north-west China six weeks ago, a news report said.
The revised toll was well above the previous figure of 2,220, the official news agency Xinhua reported.
There was an aftershock measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale in Yushu in Qinghai province on Saturday, the location of the April 15 quake.
Rebuilding in the region should take three years, according to an estimate by the national government in Beijing.
Many houses are due to be rebuilt before the winter but tents, stoves and fuel are being prepared for the region.
The 7.1-magnitude quake left 100,000 people homeless.
