Hong Kong girl, 4, survives 16-storey suicide plunge with mother
Jun 1, 2010, 5:28 GMT
Hong Kong - A 4-year-old girl was in hospital Tuesday after surviving a 16-storey plunge when her suicidal mother grabbed her and leaped from their high-rise Hong Kong apartment.
Leung Ka-yee was found conscious and sobbing in the arms of her dead mother after the pair plummeted from a window of their flat, hit a first-floor concrete ledge and ended up on a covered walkway, a police spokesman said.
The mother, Lam Po-yin, 32, was declared dead at the scene and the girl, her only child, was taken to hospital with broken bones and other injuries.
The jobless father of the girl, Leung Ka-ho, 28, told police he was asleep in the flat when the pair fell from the window and knew nothing until officers arrived at his door.
The incident is the latest in a series of attempted murder-suicides involving children in Hong Kong in recent months.
