Jun 5, 2010, 15:57 GMT
Taipei - All Taiwanese will have be required to take classes on environmental protection starting next year - a global first - under a new law that went into effect Saturday.
The requirement will mean a minimum four hours of environmental protection each year for every Taiwanese citizen. The legislation was signed into law Saturday by President Ma Ying-jeou.
The requirement takes effect on June 6, 2011.
Violators of environmental laws would also be required to pay a minimum fine of 5,000 Taiwanese dollars (156 US dollars) and take 1-8 hours of environmental education.
The education programmes will include lectures, forums, online learning, experiments, outdoor studies, field trips and films, government officials said.
