Aquino confirmed winner of Philippine presidential election
Jun 8, 2010, 9:46 GMT
Manila - A congressional committee concluded Tuesday its tally of votes for the president and vice president that showed Senator Benigno Aquino III winning the May 10 Philippine elections by over 5 million votes.
The final count showed Aquino garnering a total of 15.2 million votes, while his closest rival former president Joseph Estrada got 9.5 million votes.
But Estrada ally Jejomar Binay won the race for vice president over Aquino's choice, Senator Mar Roxas.
Binay garnered 14.6 million votes to 13.9 million votes.
The committee will present its report Wednesday to a joint session of Congress, which will ratify the electoral results.
Aquino is scheduled to take over the presidency on June 30, when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo steps down after more than nine years of tumultuous reign marred by coups and corruption scandals.
The 50-year-old Aquino, son of democracy icon and former president Corazon Aquino, vowed to probe the alleged involvement of Arroyo, her family and close friends in alleged anomalous government contracts.
