Jun 17, 2010, 6:33 GMT
Yangon - Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have claimed at least 46 lives in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine, state media reports said Thursday.
Thirty-four centimetres of rain on Tuesday caused landslides that destroyed hillside huts and claimed up to 28 lives in Minbya, Ponnagyun and Kyauktaw townships, The New Light of Myanmar newspaper said.
Floods and landslides killed another 18 people in Maungtaw township, also in Rakhine state.
'The local authorities and officials are carrying out rescue works for the victims in the flooding and landslide areas and evacuated flood victim households to the safe places,' the government mouthpiece reported.
