Seven arrested in Malaysian baby-for-sale ring; children rescued
Jul 15, 2010, 5:03 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have rescued four children and detained seven people, including an Indonesian national, believed to be part of a baby-trafficking syndicate in the eastern state of Sarawak on Borneo, a news report said Thursday.
The four children, aged 23 days to 2 years, were taken into custody after raids on two homes Monday and Wednesday, the Star newspaper reported.
Huzir Mohamed, head of Sarawak's police criminal investigations department, was quoted as saying that all the children had valid birth certificates.
Police were to check whether two of the people arrested were the children's parents, Huzir said.
'We want to be very sure and will conduct a DNA test to ascertain if the couple detained are the biological parents,' he was quoted as saying.
The children, two boys and two girls, were reportedly in good health, he said.
Police said the suspects would be investigated for human trafficking, which carries a 20-year jail term.
