Ramadan ends for Australian Muslims
Sep 10, 2010, 1:01 GMT
Sydney - More than 40,000 Muslims packed the grounds of Sydney's Lakemba mosque to celebrate the end of the fasting month Ramadan with the traditional prayers before a day of feasting and rejoicing.
Australian Muslims are among the first in the world to begin the three-day Eid al-Fitr festival because the new moon appears first in the southern hemisphere.
New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally addressed the gathering, promising to continue to block moves in the state parliament to ban the wearing of the head-to-toe burka.
