Myanmar opposition leader in Singapore on medical trip
Sep 29, 2010, 12:01 GMT
Yangon - Myanmar opposition figure Tin Oo, 83, has travelled to Singapore for an eye operation, a source close to him said Wednesday.
Tin Oo, former vice-chairman of the dissolved National League for Democracy (NLD), left Myanmar Tuesday for an operation at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Tin Oo, a close ally of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was released from six years under house detention in February.
During his detention, he lost sight in his left eye and contacted glaucoma in the right one.
Suu Kyi and Tin Oo were arrested on May 30, 2003, while campaigning in Depayin, central Myanmar.
Suu Kyi's latest detention term is due to expire on November 13, almost a week after the junta's planned general election on November 7, the first the country has held in 20 years.
