Hong Kong police clash with anti-China protesters on National Day
Oct 1, 2010, 13:13 GMT
Hong Kong - Police used pepper spray and detained a number of anti-China protesters after Chinese National Day clashes outside Beijing's de facto consulate in Hong Kong Friday, witnesses said.
Around 100 demonstrators marched to the Beijing Liaison Office in Hong Kong's Western district Friday afternoon calling for the release of political prisoners in China.
The protesters were stopped as they tried to cross a police line and officers used pepper spray in scuffles with demonstrators, according to witnesses quoted by government-run radio station RTHK.
Officers apprehended several protesters during the skirmishes, according to the witnesses, but there was no immediate comment from police on whether anyone had been formally arrested or charged.
The demonstration was held to coincide with the 61st anniversary of Communist Party rule in China which is marked by a public holiday and a fireworks display in the former British colony.
