Costa Rican president to visit China
Oct 17, 2010, 5:25 GMT
San Jose - Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla will visit China early next year to bolster new diplomatic relations, officials confirmed.
The Central American nation established formal ties with Beijing in 2007, ending its 60-year diplomatic alliance with China rival Taiwan.
Foreign Minister Rene Castro said the official visit is intended to pursue the completion of pending cooperation agreements between the two countries.
The Chinchilla administration has been criticized for its silence on the Nobel Peace Prize for jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.
On Thursday, the president visited the construction site of the new national stadium in San Jose, donated by China at an estimated cost of 100 million dollars. She refused to answer questions about the Nobel controversy.
