New Zealand TV host draws 1,500 complaints for racist comments
Oct 18, 2010, 6:35 GMT
Wellington - Television New Zealand said Monday it had received 1,500 complaints over on-air racist comments aimed at ethnic Indians by one of its presenters.
Paul Henry resigned after a storm of protests last week.
Station management said Henry's comment that Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand did not look or sound like a New Zealander breached standards of fairness and discrimination, good taste and decency.
His repeated mispronunciation of the name of Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attempt to make a scatological joke about it breached broadcasting standards, TVNZ's complaints committee said in a letter of apology to viewers.
'We understand that you were deeply offended by Paul Henry's comments,' the letter said.
