One dead, thousands displaced in Malaysian floods
Nov 3, 2010, 3:47 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - A teenage boy has drowned and almost 20,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes as floodwaters rose in Malaysia's northern states of Kedah and Perlis, officials said Wednesday.
Kedah has been the worst hit by the floods, with some 15,000 people now living in temporary relief centres, state rescue officials said. The rising water levels forced the closure of airports and major roads and highways.
A 13-year-old boy became the state's first victim after he drowned Tuesday and a 64-year-old German woman has been reported missing since Monday after she fell into the water.
In neighbouring Perlis, state rescue officers evacuated more than 4,000 people to 42 relief centres, which include schools and community halls, the Star newspaper reported.
Officials have yet to determine the total damage caused by the annual year-end monsoon rains, which typically last until early January.
