Underaged Indonesian maid likely to escape gallows in Singapore
Dec 25, 2010, 4:41 GMT
Singapore - A teenage Indonesian maid charged with murdering the disabled daughter of her Singapore employers was likely to escape the gallows if found guilty, a media report said Saturday.
Nurhayati, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was originally thought to be 24 years of age, but investigations by her lawyer and Indonesian diplomats proved that she was only 16, the Straits Times newspaper reported.
According to Singapore law, any person below 18 found guilty of a capital charge would not face the death penalty.
Nurhayati is accused of killing 12-year-old Linda Lee, who was found dead in an apartment block on November 24.
The case raised the question how the teen managed to find a job in Singapore, where maids are required to be at least 23 years old.
