Phillipine broadcaster killed in Philippines
Jan 24, 2011, 6:27 GMT
Manila - A Filipino radio commentator was killed Monday in the western Philippines by a gunman who was immediately arrested, a regional police spokesman said.
Gerry Ortega was shot in the head in Puerto Princesa City of Palawan province, 600 kilometres west of Manila.
Chief Inspector Gregorio Olaguer said Ortega died instantly.
Police officers caught the gunman a few metres from the crime scene, Olaguer said.
'Recovered from the suspect was a 45-calibre pistol and four rounds of live ammunition,' he said.
Investigators have yet to determine if the killing was related to Ortega's work as a broadcaster. The victim was a staunch critic of mining operations in Palawan.
Ortega was also a veterinarian who owned a pet shop near the area where he was killed.
