Greenpeace demands Taiwan ships stop illegally catching tuna
Jan 24, 2011, 17:36 GMT
Taipei - Dozens of Greenpeace activists clashed with police Monday as they tried to block a tuna freight vessel leaving a Taiwan harbour to operate in the Pacific Ocean.
The activists chained themselves to Lung Yuin's anchor cable and displayed a banner saying 'The Last Tuna?', claiming stocks are being depleted beyond sustainable leves.
The 3,431-tonne Lung Yuin, registered in Panama, is a refrigerated ship that stores and transports tuna caught by Taiwan trawlers.
Most of the tuna caught by Taiwan ships are exported to Japan where it is served as sashimi - raw fish - or as sushi.
Greenpeace claims that out of the 384 Taiwan trawlers, 276 fly foreign flags, are not registered with Taiwan's Fisheries Administration (FA), and operate illegally in the Pacific.
