Tokyo - Japan's emperor was diagnosed with arteriosclerosis, but his condition was not life threatening, officials said Friday.
Emperor Akihito would receive medication, but he would be able to continue his official duties, the Imperial Household Agency said.
The 77-year-old emperor underwent a coronary artery test after symptoms of cardiac ischemia, a condition caused by an insufficient supply of blood to the heart, were detected in late January.
The emperor underwent an operation for prostate cancer in 2003.
Akihito, the nation's 125th emperor, acceded to the throne after the death of his father Hirohito in 1989.
