Taiwan bakery compensates customer for toothsome cake
Feb 14, 2011, 6:14 GMT
Taipei - A Taiwan bakery has apologized to a customer and promised to tighten quality control after baking a tooth into one of its cakes, the manager said Monday.
Wu Chen-hao, manager of the 100-year-old Hsin Fu Jean bakery in Xinchu, western Taiwan, said he had apologized to Lin Cheng-yuan, and given him 6,600 Taiwan dollars (220 US dollars) and another box of cakes in compensation. Six is a lucky number in Chinese culture.
'Mr Lin has accepted our apology,' he told reporters.
Lin said he found a yellow tooth with a silver filling while eating a walnut cake bought by a colleague last week. After washing his mouth, he took the box straight to the baker to complain, he told TV channel TVBS.
Wu said the tooth could not have come from any of his workers, who wear plastic gloves and face masks when they make the cakes.
He said the tooth might have been in the raw materials - nuts, flour or meat - supplied by factories.
'We have asked our suppliers to launch an investigation. At our bakery, we will also step up quality control and will use metal detectors to check the raw materials and the cakes,' he said.
