China's population hits 1.341 billion
Feb 28, 2011, 16:56 GMT
Beijing - China said Monday its population was 1.341 billion at the end of 2010, up 6 million from a year earlier.
The figure was preliminary, said China's National Bureau of Statistics, with the final count from the 2010 census scheduled to be published in April.
The previous census, undertaken in 2000, registered a population of 1.295 billion.
The 2010 headcount of the world's largest population was the nation's sixth. In 1979, the government began implementing its 'one child policy,' which restricts urban married couples to one child.
Estimates placed the population at 1.335 billion at the end of 2009, officials said.
