Businesswoman kidnapped in southern Philippines
Mar 4, 2011, 8:33 GMT
Zamboanga City, Philippines - A businesswoman was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the southern Philippines, a regional military spokesman said Friday.
Olivia Barredo, 36, was seized late Thursday in front of her house in Zamboanga City, 875 kilometres south of Manila, Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang said.
Barredo and her husband were about to enter their house in the village of Labuan when the gunmen took her, the officer said.
The suspects left with Barredo aboard three motorized boats, Cabangbang said.
Police investigators were still determining the motive behind the abduction, but criminal groups and Muslim militants engaged in kidnappings-for-ransom are known to operate in the area.
