Japan emperor, empress to visit nuclear evacuees
Apr 7, 2011, 7:32 GMT
Tokyo - Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are Friday to make a condolence visit to evacuees from areas near the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, the government said Thursday.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, the couple are to travel to a high school in Kazo City, north of Tokyo, where 1,200 people who fled from Futaba Town after the power plant was crippled by the March earthquake and following tsunami are being housed.
The emperor and empress are also to visit quake- and tsunami- ravaged areas. The couple have been deeply upset by the devastation caused by the twin disasters and sympathized with those affected, Kyodo News reported citing the agency.
In late March, the emperor and empress visited other Fukushima residents staying in a shelter in central Tokyo.
