Chinese chief of staff to visit US
Apr 27, 2011, 3:08 GMT
Beijing - The Chinese chief of general staff is to visit the United States in May, the Defence Ministry was quoted as saying by news reports Wednesday.
'I will visit the United States next month at the invitation of Mike Mullen, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff,' General Chen Bingde, chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was quoted as saying by state news agency Xinhua.
He told a visiting delegation of the US Congress late Tuesday that he would discuss 'bilateral military relations and other issues of common concern' with 'US political and military leaders.'
Chen said his visit would follow the successful trip to the US by President Hu Jintao in January.
'The relations between our armed forces face good opportunities now,' Chen said. However, he said that US arms sales to Taiwan remained the 'largest obstacle' to good bilateral military relations.
