Dozens of foreigners arrested in Vietnam for internet scam
May 14, 2011, 8:16 GMT
Hanoi - Police in Ho Chi Minh City arrested 56 foreigners for 'high tech' transnational fraud following an investigation, state media reported Saturday.
The group pretended to be customs and tax officials in order to 'entice' victims into providing personal account information, internet news site Viet Nam Net said.
Once personal details were obtained, the gang told victims they had been hacked and that they should transfer their money to a 'police' account, which was fake.
The report did not specify how much money had been stolen or which countries the gang members were from.
State-run newspaper Nhan Dan said the group of 45 men and 11 women were 'Asian.' Police confiscated 17 computers, 15 modems and 103 mobile phones.
In July, 99 Taiwanese and Chinese people were arrested for similar offences, Viet Nam Net said.
