Hong Kong mother takes incense-burning neighbors to court
May 20, 2011, 3:37 GMT
Hong Kong - A Hong Kong mother has gone to court to try to stop her neighbors from burning incense sticks that she claimed are harming her baby, a news report said Friday.
Hu Wei-hsin said her baby, born prematurely in March, is suffering breathing problems because of the six incense sticks a day burned by her neighbors, the Hong Kong Standard reported.
At a court hearing Thursday, she said the fumes from the incense sticks hung in the corridors of the apartment block all day. A district court judge and lawyers representing Hu and the family of three who burn the incense visited the building. The hearing was due to continue Friday.
Incense burning is common in Hong Kong and has been used for centuries in Chinese religious ceremonies and for meditation. It is banned in the public areas of many housing blocks in the city.
