Taiwan to host the first under-12 baseball world championship
Jun 20, 2011, 11:09 GMT
Taipei - The International Baseball Federation (IBAF) will hold the first under-12 baseball world championship in Taiwan in July as part of its effort to re-install baseball as an Olympic sport, the Chinese-Taipei Baseball Association said Monday.
The 15-team tournament will be held in Taipei July 8-17 as the IBAF is rallying support to re-install baseball at the 2020 Olympics.
Baseball was an Olympic sport 1992-2008, but has been cut from the 2012 and 2016 Games.
The idea to hold the under-12 baseball championship was made by Tom Peng, the Taiwan member of the IBAF Executive Committee.
Peng said that to get baseball back into the Olympics, IBAF should promote baseball among young players so that sports officials can see that baseball is suitable for all ages, all races and all territories.
