Malaysian police nab 10 in suspected Thailand-linked drug ring
Aug 9, 2011, 4:11 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have arrested 10 people suspected of being part of a drug trafficking syndicate distributing unprocessed drugs from Thailand, a news report said Tuesday.
Malaysian and Thai police conducted a raid in the northern state of Kedah in a raid on Friday and also seized nearly 6.5 million ringgit (2.17 million dollars) worth of drugs, said anti-narcotics department director Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
The drugs, which included methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana, were hidden in car parts, he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times daily.
Noor Rashid said police also confiscated six luxury cars, nine mobile phones and nine passports from the suspects, who have all been placed under remand.
The drug ring is believed to have been actively distributing drugs from Thailand in Malaysia's northern states for more than a year, he said.
The suspects will be charged with drug trafficking, which carries the mandatory death sentence by hanging on conviction.
