EU foreign policy chief welcomes Myanmar reconciliation meeting

Brussels - The meeting between Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the pro-military government was 'a positive step' towards reconciliation in the country, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said Saturday.
'We very much welcome this positive step. National reconciliation is very important for all the people of (Myanmar) and we hope that this meeting can bear fruit in the long term,' Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said.
Suu Kyi, who spent 15 of the past 21 years under house arrest, and was freed in November, was invited to the capital Friday to meet President Thein Sein. On Saturday, she attended a government workshop on national development and met several top officials.
