Hanoi - Four former prison wardens in central Vietnam have been charged with beating a prisoner to death, local media reported Thursday.
The four, aged between 20 and 26, are accused of using plastic batons to beat a prisoner to death in the Central Highlands in September last year, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Truong Thanh Tuan, 28, was beaten after guards discovered he had smuggled a mobile phone into his cell, the report said. Tuan was serving a 24-year prison sentence.
The guards had to pay a total compensation of 123 million dong (6,150 dollars) to the victim's family.
