Jakarta governor accused of blaming rape victims
Sep 17, 2011, 3:44 GMT
Jakarta(dpa)- Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo has provoked criticism after urging women to dress 'properly' to avoid becoming victims of sexual assault, news reports said on Saturday.
He made the comments after a woman was raped by four men including the driver of a public minibus last week.
'Wear sensible clothes, don't wear 'inviting' clothes. You can imagine, if [a woman] wears short skirt and sits next to the driver, it could be 'inviting,'' Fauzi Bowo was quoted as saying by Jakarta Globe newspaper.
The governor was criticized as insensitive and refusing to face the problem of safety on public transportation.
'Public figures should be on the victim's side. He should not victimize women,' said Yunianti Chuzaifah, of the National Commission for Women's Affairs, quoted by Detik online news portal.
