Philippine president on US visit to seek investments

Sep 18, 2011, 5:51 GMT

Manila - Philippine President Benigno Aquino III headed to the United States on Sunday for a five-day visit to promote his government's anti-corruption campaign and seek more investments.

'The visit aims to enhance the country's strategic profile by underscoring the Aquino government's demonstrated commitment to its good governance and anti-corruption agenda,' the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The president also seeks to 'highlight the administration's economic agenda and accomplishments after a year in office,' the department added.

Aquino plans to address the Open Government Partnership in New York and a give a lecture at the World Bank-IMF annual meetings in Washington.

The partnership forum is an initiative headed by US President Barack Obama and Brazilian Dilma Rousseff to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

Aquino would meet with potential investors in New York and Washington, the foreign office said.

The president would also visit US Senator Daniel Inouye to thank him for his continued support of Philippine causes.
