Earthquake kills seven in China
Sep 19, 2011, 5:18 GMT
Beijing - An earthquake centred in northern India killed at least seven people and injured 24 in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, officials said Monday.
The quake caused hundreds of landslides and disrupted traffic and utilities in Yadong County, the Xinhua news agency reported.
'Relief supplies are on the way to Yadong,' said Dianzin Namgyai, secretary of the Xigaze Prefecture committee of the Communist Party of China.
Authorities sent heavy machinery to clear roads to help aid reach affected areas.
The Tibet Military Command deployed more than 1,000 personnel to take part in relief work.
Three of those injured by the quake were reported to be in critical condition.
The epicentre of the magnitude-6.8 quake was 68 kilometres north-west of Gangtok, the capital of the Indian state of Sikkim, which borders the Tibet Autonomous Region.
The quake also killed at least 34 people in India, nine in Nepal and one in Bhutan, local media reported quoting government officials.
