Satirical sex romp leaves Australian premier unmoved
Sep 20, 2011, 7:52 GMT
Sydney - Prime Minister Julia Gillard Tuesday declined to condemn a satirical television programme portraying her having sex on the floor of her office under a giant-sized national flag.
At Home With Julia is a fictional depiction of Gillard's private life with her live-in boyfriend, Tim Mathieson.
Critics declared it lacking in humour, feminists have deplored it for showing the head of government in a domestic setting and some political commentators said it demeans the office of prime minister.
'I think a bit more discretion when using the flag is appropriate, even when you are trying to make a joke,' David Flint of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy told The Australian newspaper.
Gillard, who opinion polls show is the nation's least popular premier in 40 years, is staying away from the controversy.
National broadcaster ABC said the actors playing Gillard and Mathieson had been depicted in a 'very gentle, tender scene.'
